I was fortunate to have exposure to the supportive and encouraging members of the Eatontown and Tinton Falls Board of Education teachers, coaches, and guidance counselors. The Eatontown and Tinton Falls school districts prepared me well for The College of New Jersey (Dean’s List), Widener University School of Law (Dean’s List), and for life in and out of the courtroom.
Our firm has created and supported many financial scholarships for students at Monmouth Regional High School. It is an honor to attend awards night where members of the business and local community come to the high school and award scholarships for members of the graduating class.
The family of Captain James Gurbisz provides several scholarships each year to Monmouth Regional students, as well as many other opportunities for our students. Our firm has also awarded scholarships to students for the Captain James Gurbisz Scholarship. Being a part of the Captain James Gurbisz scholarship is a tremendous honor as it is in recognition of my friend from high school, “Jimmy” Gurbisz, a standout athlete and West Point graduate.
The NJSBA carries on the great tradition of the Vincent J. Apruzzese Mock Trial Competition and Monmouth Regional High School is a participant. The program is designed to increase comprehension of the historical, ethical and philosophical bases of the American system of justice to students and to help students increase basic life and leadership skills such as listening, speaking, writing, reading and analyzing. Our firm also created a scholarship for best performing student in the Monmouth Regional High School Mock Trial Program.
I had the privilege to be a volunteer trial attorney coach for Monmouth Regional High School for many years and continue to do so. Nearly twenty hours a week, for several months each year, volunteer time was donated to prepare the MRHS students for trial in this competition. Although the pandemic put a halt in the mock trial program, I am hopeful it will be reinstated.
MRHS competed against the top schools in Monmouth County, by engaging in actual trial competitions in the Monmouth County Superior Courthouse in Freehold, New Jersey. I coached MRHS in thrilling trial victories over well-known academic programs of MAST, RBC, CBA, Colts Neck and many other schools. Each year my firm presented at least one (and sometimes two) graduating students from the MRHS team with a financial scholarship to recognize their outstanding achievement.
However, the biggest thrill of all was a few years ago when the MRHS team coached by my father and I won the County Championship and MRHS had the best trial team in Monmouth County! That team was recognized by the Eatontown Mayor and Council for their accomplishments at a Council Meeting at Borough Hall.
